YOUTH PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOP
TIME: 09:00-18:00
A Youth Pre-Conference Workshop will be held on 17-18 March
for young people from Abu Dhabi, the Middle East and other parts of the world.
This workshop will aim to empower the young participants by building their
leadership and advocacy skills and provide a common networking platform for
tobacco control campaigns through exchange and mentorship opportunities. The
workshop outcomes will be presented to the WCTOH delegates as recommendations
from the youth delegates to the global tobacco control fraternity.
During the first day workshop, tobacco control experts from
across the world will interact with the selected young delegates (aged 18 to 30
years) to deliberate with them on the current tobacco control scenario and
envision innovative methods to put an end to tobacco. Goals include building
their capacity to use surveillance data on tobacco trends and to engage in
advocacy efforts calling for policy action. The workshop will highlight the
unique challenges posed by trends in tobacco use among young people, including
the use of shisha smoking, hookahs, smokeless tobacco, flavoured cigarettes and
bidis.
On the second day, participants will attend the Update on
the WHO FCTC and MPOWER day-long symposium.
Registration for a scholarship to attend the Youth
Pre-Conference Workshop is NOW CLOSED.

About the Bloomberg Philanthropies Awards for Global Tobacco
Control
Bloomberg Philanthropies is proud to host the third
Bloomberg Philanthropies Awards for Global Tobacco Controlas part of the World
Conference on Tobacco or Health in Abu Dhabi. The Awards were created to
recognise governments and non-governmental organizations demonstrating
excellent progress or achievement in the implementation of MPOWER measures in
low-and middle-income countries. MPOWER, established by the World Health
Organization and consistent with the WHO FCTC, describes six of the most
effective tobacco control measures: Monitoring the epidemic and prevention
policies; Protecting people from second-hand smoke; Offering help to people who
want to quit; Warning about the dangers of tobacco; Enforcing bans on
advertising, promotion and sponsorship; and Raising taxes and prices. A panel
of global tobacco control experts will select the awardees. All registered
conference attendees are welcome to attend.
